Your First Dental Implant Procedure: What to Expect

Dental Implant process

A dental implant replaces the root of a tooth with metal screws known as ‘posts’ or ‘frames’. The post fits in the jawbone to hold the ‘cap’ or ‘crown’. However, this is a surgical procedure, and quite complicated.

Your dentist will suggest a dental implant if the damaged natural tooth is beyond repair, or missing. These can be either dentures or bridges. If this is your first time getting a dental implant, here is all you need to know about it.

The stages in dental implant procedure are:-

1. X-Rays

Before the procedure begins, the dentist will take X-Rays of the affected tooth or teeth. This is an important process since the dentist the exact position of nerves in the jaw bone. The X-rays are the primary valuation your dentist will need.

2. Impressions for Your Dental Implant

Then the dentist will take the impression of the patient’s mouth. This will give the dentist an idea about the structure and location of all the teeth in the mouth. A plastic tray with liquid such as alginate or polyvinyl siloxane will be put in the patient’s mouth.

3. Extraction

If there is a tooth that needs to be extracted, the dentist will do it at this point. Preparation for dental implant surgery may sometimes involve bone grafting. This happens when the jawbone is not strong enough to support an implant.

4. Fixing the Dental Implant

Then comes the implant. The dentist will drill a hole in the jawbone of the patient and place the screwlike implant there. Over a period of 3 to 12 months, your gum will gradually grow over the implant.

5. Abutment Placement

Over time, the dental implant and the jawbone will fuse. This process is osseointegration. This could take weeks or months.

6. Permanent Crown

Once the abutment is ready, the dentist can affix the crown. It looks exactly like your real teeth. This may be a fixed crown or a removable one or a combination of both. However, only your dentist can remove fixed crowns; while removable ones act similar to bridges.

Swelling is also a very normal occurrence after a dental implant. It reaches its peak two to three days after surgery.

There is some amount of bleeding after surgery. However, if it is severe, patients should get in touch with their dental surgeons.

Do not drink or eat things that are too hot. Chewing should be avoided for the first few days after surgery. However, the food eaten should be healthy and comforting.

Resume regular oral hygiene as soon after the surgery as possible. Be gentle with your teeth and gums but make sure that you clean the area around the surgical area meticulously. This will help in speedy healing.

Do not smoke. It will delay the healing process. Smoking during the healing phase is strongly discouraged by dentists all over the world.

After Procedure

Rinse mouth with salt water 2-3 times a day at the very least, especially after meals. Eat soft foods. Soups are preferable at this time.
